On Golden Pond

Panguil Bay

In essence, Panguil Bay is not just a bay but a safe and clean body of water guarded by the mountains of Mt. Malindang and Lanao del Norte. It is surrounded by natural mangroves along its shorelines all the way from the corridor of lanao to the northseas of oroquieta city. This special bay is also nurtured with constant supply of fresh water from the multitude of rivers and its arteries connecting to the shores. The secret of its life is the endless supply of marine life and products especially crabs, prawns and shrimps and the latest and best delicacy on high demand - the lapu lapu. The misamisnons and their neighbors from lanao  are lucky with such richness and expensive resources, picking and craving at any time of the day for sumptuous dinners and meals from Panguil bay. Panguil is a golden pond. By its very nature, this water serves as a natural breeding ground of these special species, and quite incomparable to any other parts of the country.

Is the province prepared to give up this blessing, a natural wealth  and allow foreign and other profit-conscious businemen to exploit panguil bay for its resources for the sake of investment, but face the risk of lower food supply and high prices?

The rise of prawn/shrimps business and fishpond cultivations in misamis, lanao and zamboanga and its exports to other countries in the 80's seemed to be the era of good tidings for the people of these provinces. But it was not really meant to be for a longterm benefit. Prices of prawns and shrimps skyrocketed beyond affordability and pockets of the local consumers. Eventually fishpond owners ended up still burdened with unpaid loans.

Lapu-lapu fishcages

Lapu-lapu is now the "in" thing and fast becoming to be the best delicacy to meet the high demand of the vast chinese consumers in hongkong and mainland china. Is the province prepared to cater to this demand? Would the prawn and shrimps debacle in the 80s be repeated in lapu lapu?

Enjoy our very own.
